Computers - Clones:"BASIS 108"
This clone was one that greatly interested me in the couple of years before I could afford to get a real Apple II. Built in Germany, it was a dual processor computer with a 6502 and ability to run Apple II software, but also had a Z-80 processor and could run the CP/M operating system and software. It came with built-in Centronics (parallel) and RS232c (serial) ports, as well as the standard six Apple II compatible slots.
The 8-Bit Nirvana German web site has an entry for the Basis 108, which (translated roughly) reads as follows:
The Basis 108 is a clone of the Apple ][. It's technical specifications are essentially identical to those of the original [Apple II].
There are however also improvements in relation to the [Apple II] model: The Basis 108 is equipped with a 6502 and a Z80, the latter modification done not through a plug-in card, and enabled one to use CP/M. It also contained an 80-column character generator (which was indispensable under CP/M). The memory in its basic configuration is 64 KByte and can be increased to 128 KByte. A further advantage is the separate, very clearly designed keyboard with a German character set. There was also a numeric keypad and another block for the cursor keys, which made work more pleasant than with the original Apple keyboard. |
