The paddles that came with the original Apple II had problems with a too-tiny button (which made one's thumb sore when firing repeatedly at attacking enemies in certain games), so Apple did a re-design and came out with controllers that looked better and were easier on the thumb. I cannot find a specific release date for this peripheral, but I believe it came out about the same time as the Apple IIe.
