That centers the summation since the "i equals 1" is three characters, and the "infinity" is only 1. Notice the no-standard 4-5-6 space 4-6 k 4-5-6 space to get an equals sign without spaces around it (that would look very bad in the output, since MathematiX cannot print smaller characters) In the translation, the are control-T's, the touching tokens.
