Announcing Duxbury DBT Win 12.4 sr1

DBT 12.4 sr1
2019-03-07 2019-03-12)

Primarily, this service release resolves issues reported with respect to specific embossers.

• For Columbia embossers, this release realigns the front to back registration, restoring the correct spacing.
• For the Interpoint Elekul 55 (Belgium), output has been fully updated to restore all functionality. (A Reminder: It is important that the path to PRINT55.EXE be properly set in the Device Settings tab of the Global Embosser Setup. A newly created embosser setup will have this set correctly by default.)
• The TranSend SE embosser has a restored font list.

In addition:

• We have modified DBT's .bru importer w.r.t. importing notetaker .brl files. (These braille files are typically formatted with each paragraph as one long line.) If you begin your .brl file with the four characters "_%_:", the DBT importer treats the file as Nemeth Code in UEB context, causing it to automatically assign the styles math and math-TextInMath where appropriate. This handling matches the .brf file importer handling for .brf files starting with those four characters.
• - We have revised and updated the DBT Help files, focusing on the topics that describe the different braille translators. We hope that customers gain a better understanding of the Duxbury DBT translators through our efforts to improve our documentation.

The core of Duxbury DBT and its translators has not changed.

DBT 12.4
2018-12-20 (2019-01-03)

Major Improvements

• For lengthy file imports, DBT now displays a progress bar.
• DBT opens files faster, with quicker performance in general operations.
• In UEB templates, there is a new chemistry style. For any technical notation within the chemistry style, there is no use of word or passage capital indicators, as each capital letter is capitalized separately.
• The NEW Bristol Braille Canute Mk13 Braille eReader is supported as an embosser.
• Graphic images in centered headings are now well handled.
• The BANA Listed Tables format is restored.
• The insertion of [hl] codes is no longer restricted when importing DAISY or XML files, as it is for Word files.
• The biggest additions in languages are starter tables for the Arabic, German, Russian, and Spanish math (technical notation) braille systems. These braille math codes may impact braille production in over 80 countries.
  • Templates for these four languages all have a math style. For example, if you use the math style in a German template, you get German math braille. For ease of use, the math style is inserted automatically when you import a LaTeX file.
  • The Russian math translator affects technical braille for many languages: Armenian (Eastern), Azerbaijani, Belorussian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Chuvash, Croatian, Czech, Estonian, Georgian, Hungarian, Ingush, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovakian, Tajik, Tatar, Turkmen, Udmurt, Ukrainian, Uzbek.
  • The Arabic language and unified Arabic braille rules are used in over 25 countries.
  • The Spanish language and unified Spanish braille rules are used in about 20 countries.
  • You are invited to test the math braille translators and send suggested improvements to languages@duxsys.com.
• Sample files for over a hundred languages are incorporated into the DBT Help so that you can quickly test DBT in an unfamiliar language.

Mathematics Braille

• UTF-8 conversion is now built into our LaTeX importer. This allows non-ASCII characters in the text: unusual accented letters, non-Roman scripts such as Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Hindi, etc., to be imported directly into DBT as combined text and math in a single step.
• The LaTeX importer now treats the code $$, when adjacent to a tab character, as the start or end of displayed math.
• The LaTeX importer no longer generates a space in cases where a LaTeX or MathType passage includes a "thin space". These extra spaces caused unneeded braille indicators in some math translators.
• The LaTeX importer no longer ignores some absolute value signs.
• The LaTeX importer now handles Greek letter variant forms, the so-called blackboard characters, and some additional special characters.
• Handling of reference page indicators in UEB with Nemeth is improved.
• The ending codes for the math style have been refined. We have moved the [i] code to the end, which prevents the insertion of the grade 1 indicator before certain punctuation marks, such as the question mark.

Embossers

• DBT can now generate interline print for Gemini embossers.
• DBT supports the ViewPlus "Tiger" registry key and enforces a 0.5 inch minimum top margin for the Columbia embosser.
  • The Columbia model, with a top margin setting of 0 now has an effective 0.5" top margin. A top margin setting of 1 has an effective 0.65" top margin. For higher top margin settings in DBT, the effective margin is 0.4" times the number entered in DBT.
• For dual ink and braille embossers, DBT eliminates most inappropriate gaps in the inkprint text.
• DBT codes no longer appear in the interline print of embosser output.
• For entries in the printer queue, DBT no longer adds "(Ink)" to the document name when not appropriate.
• DBT now prints TactileView (TV) Images to the Columbia embosser - and presumably other ViewPlus embossers - at the intended size. Note that the image size is not set directly from DBT, but DBT ensures that the size should be the same in the output as on screen. (Note: the size is determined by the image height, and images that are too wide for the page are likely to be clipped. For such images, direct output from TV may be the appropriate approach.)

More Language Updates

According to the 2013 UNESCO document World Braille Usage, Arabic Pre-2002 is the official Arabic translator for Bahrain, Iran, Malaysia, and Indonesia. DBT now has a template for the Pre-2002 Arabic translator.

To assist those studying ancient languages, a new template and translator for the transcription of Semitic Languages have been added.

The English UEB translation table was changed to allow the functionality of the chemistry style, and also to refine the contraction use in a series of uncommon words.

	Spanish: adds a math-only print-to-braille translator invoked by using the math style. (Note: preliminary.)
	Ukrainian: the template now shows the capital letter sign in braille.
	Uzbek: the translators reflect a minor change in the braille translation rules that removes an ambiguity about the braille 'e'.
	Vietnamese: better handling of letter d and letter d with a stroke, (đ) U+0111.

There were two problems with DBT 12.3: a serious formatting glitch and issues related to Russian capitalization. These were fixed in this service release which also includes a substantial improvement to the Irish translator.

Duxbury Systems continually revises DBT to respond to braille rules changes, make fixes, and to add new features. Below you will find our latest changes since the last release.

New Braille Embossers

• DBT adds support for two new Irie embossers, the BrailleSheet 120 and the BrailleTrac 120.
• Graphics on Index V5 embossers now output using the "floating dot" format. One benefit is that TactileView graphics output successfully when embedded in a DBT document sent to an Index V5 embosser.

Math Improvements

• MathType 7 is now supported.
• French mathematics braille is now supported in the French Unified braille-to-print translator.
• Users can now import braille formatted files (BRF's) containing UEB with Nemeth Code, as long as the file starts with a special 4-cell braille header: _%_:
• The MAVIS module now correctly recognizes mixed numbers at the start of math mode.
• The arc sign is now recognized.
• The English/Unified (UEB) print-to-braille table accepts U+27C2 for the "perpendicular" symbol.
• DBT's LaTeX importer now allows a "pass through in math" section to be more flexible about characters appearing at the end of a paragraph.
• The LaTeX importer allows "pass through in math" with the math-TextInMath style, to be used in additional situations, such as when items are separated by LaTeX \vspace commands or sectioning commands (like \section and \subsection).
• The LaTeX importer and exporter now handle European accented letters.
• For Nemeth Code in UEB context, the end Nemeth Code indicator is now set up to be on the same line as the last item in Nemeth Code.
• For Nemeth Code in UEB context, the new styles RefPageUEBSwitch (and the RefPageUEBSwitch-Embed version) now allow for a new reference page number in UEB without having to terminate and restart Nemeth Code.

General Improvements

• DBT initialization is now much faster.
• DBT has improved copying from a braille document into a target other than DBT, such as CorelDRAW.
• DBT's Excel importer handles dates in the default format when no format is specified.
• Enhanced "code page" selection; allowing greater freedom to import non-English, non-Unicode textfiles.
• The "F5" codes list no longer displays antiquated ampersand codes.
• The "UEB Pharmaceutical" template is now called "English (UEB) Pharmaceutical".
• The two pharmaceutical DBT templates now suppress braille page numbering.
• The JAWS script files no longer say "same spot" to alert the user that the cursor is remaining in place while repeatedly pressing the left or right arrow in formatted view. Instead JAWS makes a subtle click.
• When you have checked the Global View setting Use verbose labels for non-ANSI characters, JAWS speaks the Unicode value from the DBT status line when voicing a character or its Unicode number. This is very helpful when navigating a DBT print document containing Asian languages that use composite characters, such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Hindi.

	Russian: Russian: Now prevents use of the "ae", "ng", and "tc" combined characters, with improved comma handling in braille-to-print.
	Spanish: Fixed two punctuation characters in braille-to-print translation.
	Thai: Updated the braille-to-print translation direction to match recent work in print-to-braille.

Major Improvements

• Allow use of braille fonts in DBT find (Edit Menu)
• Substantial improvements to the DBT Help
• Able to insert a DBT file into another file (restoring functionality)

UEB Improvements

• Updated all the UEB Templates, adding three "fixit" styles (see below)
• Fix the Exercise style in BANA with Nemeth Template, removing hidden right margin.

Misc. Changes

• You can not use a hard hyphen in a find string (restore 12.1 functionality)
• Remove the period at the end of a line for linear tables (respecting the new format rules).
• Allow braille entry of dots 456 via a braille device linked via JAWS
• It should now be possible to copy text from DBT and paste it into CorelDRAW!
• DBT no longer fails to reload images saved in .dxp or .dxb files when any of the images have no labels.

Duxbury Systems continually revises DBT to make fixes, respond to braille rules changes, and to add new features. The list below covers only changes since the last release. For the most recent information; possibly newer than that included here, please take advantage of Check for Updates from the Help menu. Or, visit the Duxbury Website for both new information and historical information about features and updates.

English UEB

• Now supports document-specific Typeform Indicators as defined in the UEB Rules of Unified English Braille Section 9 for inkprint attributes that carry meanings the braille reader needs to know about . A range of such indicators can be defined such as the use of Script Font, Text Color or Highlight Color, as well as Drop Shadow and Outline Text. See the new user interface in the Global: Word-Importer dialogue.
• Certain currency expressions, when marked as "technical notation," no longer give rise to an unnecessary grade one word indicator.
• When a sequence of single capitalized letters is treated as a passage, the last such letter is included in the passage.
• If [ps]...[pe] (i.e. superscript) codes immediately surround a trademark symbol (U+2122), they are now discarded as redundant.
• Contractions of several uncommon medical terms have been improved.

New Embossers and Embosser Fixes

• Support for the Braillo 300 S2 has been added to DBT.
• TranSend SE is now supported on Romeo 60 and Juliet 120.

JAWS Improvements

• JAWS now has better support for the DBT Spell Checker.
• When reading a line as braille characters, for multiple spaces JAWS now says the number of spaces instead of speaking each space individually.
• The JAWS script files for DBT include several new keyboard commands:
  • Alt+Comma - once, speaks the current column position; twice, speaks the number of remaining characters on the line.
  • Alt+Period - once, speaks the number of characters on the line; twice, speaks the number of spaces on the left.
  • Alt+Slash: speaks the last word on the line.
  • Alt+Semicolon - new keystroke to toggle between the PC cursor and the JAWS cursor at the start of the translated line.
• No digits are missing when you press Alt+9 to hear location information.
• JAWS consistently speaks the new page number when you move from one page to another in a DBT document.
• For those using JAWS with refreshable braille using grade 2 translation, JAWS no longer says "computer braille" when DBT switches to a braille document window and the JAWS translation setting for refreshable braille changes to computer braille. Those announcements could be frequent, and users found them annoying.

Math Improvements

• For translating into Nemeth Code in UEB context, we have solved a problem that caused intermittent errors at the start of math sections, such as a missing numeric indicator for a number at the start of a Nemeth Code section.
• When importing a LaTeX file (from Scientific Notebook or another source) to create Nemeth Code in a UEB context, DBT now correctly suppresses the terminating and starting Nemeth indicators where there should be a "pass through in math" section; it also puts in the "one-word switch" where appropriate.
• When importing math for Nemeth Code in UEB context, embedded text in a math expression that occurs inside a pass through in math section no longer causes problems.
• The translated line no longer drops spaces in certain locations. Specifically, use of the math style now does not cause a space to be dropped on the translated line.
• When importing a LaTeX file that uses the command \includegraphics, the DBT document now gives the filename of the graphics file.

User Interface

• The Global, Word-Importer dialogue has a new option for mapping font characteristics to transcriber-defined Typeform Indicators for English UEB.
• Selecting the correct language for Han character import now happens automatically with the choice of a DBT template. (Previously this selection always had to be done manually from the Global, Import Options dialogue, and that option is still allowed if the user wishes to continue to specify the choice directly.)
• DBT updates documents immediately when certain global options are changed.

Miscellaneous Changes

• We have improved the display of the translated line in formatted print documents for languages that introduce discretionary hyphens.
• We have added two spaces to the formatted-view translated line at each place where a tab code is present in the markup.
• We have eliminated the introduction of a bullet and space at the start of some "numbered" paragraphs in .docx files, where Word itself does not show them.
• Treatment of blank cells in columnar tables has been amended to come more completely into compliance with BANA Guidelines.
• The BANA Listed Table format now conforms to BANA Formats 2011 (11.16.1.e), so that for each row, the first element is formatted as a cell-5 heading. (That first element is normally labeled with the column heading.)
• A Byte Order Mark, if present, is now stripped from the start of Unicode text imports, particularly when imported through DBT's formatted text importer.
• DBT now adds codes to control spacing within the Exact Translation style when importing Word .doc and .docx files.

	Chinese Mandarin (Taiwan): improved print-to-braille and braille-to-print translators, uses Zhuyin characters intead of Pinyin. It is now possible to mix Chinese and English (English segments must start with a capital letter).
	Croatian: now with a functional braille-to-print translator.
	Danish: braille-to-print translation properly uses the exclamation mark (when the dropped 'f' is at the end of a word) and better handles a contraction before a period (full stop).
	Dzongkha: DBT supports the new braille rules.
	IPA: handles the UEB indicators for brackets and slash.
	Korean: the braille-to-print translation has many improvements.
	Portuguese: now handles four additional punctuation marks in braille-to-print translation.
	Slovenian: the braille-to-print direction now uses the new Croatian braille-to-print translator.
	Spanish: braille-to-print translation can produce a proper period in all contexts.
	Thai: fixed two formerly incorrect characters in print-to-braille.
	Venda: improvements in print-to-braille; now includes a functional braille-to-print translator.
	Welsh (Cymraeg): fixed some previously incorrect contractions.

DBT 12.1 SR1
2016-07-26 (2016-09-09)

Primary Improvements

• In all UEB templates as well as those derived from UEB, the computer braille styles are updated to render accurate word breaking. Only those templates specifically for older (pre-UEB) documents still enforce the Pre-UEB word breaking rules.
• The four DBT BANA templates (both UEB and Pre-UEB) are once again updated to the most recent versions. This corrects some formatting errors in the 12.1 BANA templates and includes BB-BoxBegin and H1-HeadingCentered.
• In the English/American (pre-UEB) print-to-braille tables, the output of underline symbols is restored.
• In the English/Unified (UEB) print-to-braille table certain contractions that follow an apostrophe have been improved.
• The Afrikaans print-to-braille table and Sotho print-to-braille table have been updated with contraction changes received recently from South Africa.
• Refinements in the Welsh print-to-braille table restrict shortform usage within large words to the officially approved list and ensure that strings of letters that could be read as extended shortforms are appropriately marked with grade 1 indicators. Other improvements include automated generation of hyphenation points within long technical expressions such as URLs.
• For Myanmar text, DBT now handles some additional, critical Burmese characters for translating Burmese text to braille.

This service release also features the following JAWS script improvements:

1. The script files for DBT 12.1 changed the technique for SayWord to insure the whole word was gathered and spoken. This change compromised making a selection. The latest script insures that if a selection is in progress, all the words in the selection are retained.
2. When using a braille display with JAWS 17, the script files manage the JAWS braille translation settings better (turning off input translation) to ensure that output translation is off when you are viewing a braille document.
3. The save and restore of a Speech Profile is now limited to JAWS version17 and higher to prevent "unknown function" errors in earlier versions of JAWS.
4. Repetitious announcements of "computer braille" when the window focus is shifted are now suppressed.

Primary Areas of Improvement

DBT Templates Streamlined

Mathematics

Numerous additions to math functionality; here are the highlights:

• Many more unusual mathematics characters are now handled
• Spacing and control of spacing around function names in UEB math and French math have been improved
• Better importing of aligned structures
• Better handling of the Unicode minus sign
• Nemeth translation has been updated to use dot 6 for the comma when outside of "technical notation" but still in "Nemeth mode." This means that in the English (UEB) - BANA with Nemeth template, a comma in the style math-TextInMath is brailled as dot 6, rather than dots 456,2 following Nemeth rules.

JAWS Developments

Helpful additions in the JAWS script files for DBT, including:

• A better way for JAWS to announce style markup; it now says "begin style" and "end style"
• Editing in print and braille documents with JAWS is now snappier
• When moving by word in a braille document, JAWS no longer speaks the word as braille dots if you are also using a braille device
• When you press Control+H for highlighting in DBT, JAWS keeps better track of when the highlighting is turned off
• The script supports the use of a DBT-specific voice profile, with return to the default voice profile on leaving DBT
• When arrowing left or right in a braille document in coded view with high contrast on, JAWS no longer says "space" for every character
• In coded view, you can now navigate onto a left brace character ( { )

UEB Updates

• When translating material into UEB, the translator is more selective about switching to a grade one passage for technical notation
• Improved auto-hyphenation, including grouping of braille numbers 16 cells or less in length
• Symbols that are not hyphens nor dashes, but contain dots 36, are no longer allowed as potential line break points
• The translation of certain unusual names has been fixed
• The translation of mixed alpha-numerics, such as AA.12, has been adjusted to be easier to read in braille
• Mid-line ellipsis (U+22EF), double or triple dots over a variable name, and other uncommon math symbols, are now treated correctly
• The Latin letter schwa (U+0259) and primary and secondary stress symbols, when entered as U+02C8 and U+02CC respectively, are now supported
• Braille-to-print support for Old/Middle English letters: yogh, thorn, eth and wynn
• Plus many other changes to improve the production of UEB braille

Restored Functionality

• Restoration of the francais.mws Word style map file
• Repair of the Hindi file importer

Misc Features

• Improved read only text controls and their acceptance of keyboard focus

Math Improvements

• The LaTeX importer now supports macros using \newcommand with parameters.

• In using the LaTeX and Word importers for Nemeth within UEB, there has been a major improvement in the system for using [[*idle~ptims*]] and [[*idle~ptime*]] to set up a section where items outside of technical notation remain in Nemeth Code. This is intended specifically for problem labels within a section of problems consisting entirely of technical notation.
• Two other importer codes have been added to specify that the enclosed text should be treated as technical notation. These codes are [[*ts*]] and [[*te*]]. These codes are intended for importing math when not using MathType or LaTeX.
• The BANA Braille template has buttons for inserting these codes.
• In UEB braille documents with Nemeth Code, the print on the translated line is no longer garbled after the first occurrence of Nemeth Code.

UEB (Unified English Braille)

• Typeform indicators in UEB more closely follow user expectations.
• Hard spaces around underlining commands, which are not appropriate for UEB, have been eliminated.
• The TSBVI "Clusters" learning series for UEB has been added to DBT's partial-contraction menu for English/UEB.
• Guide text for UEB should use dots (6,36) instead of (36,36). Click on the link below for the details. One issue is that making this change makes your files unsuitable for embossing with pre-11.3 DBT software.

Math Improvements

• When you Save As to Word, you can display DBT math equations in Word using MathType.
• When you Save As to LaTeX, you can display DBT math equations in Word using Scientific Notebook or Scientific Viewer.
• You can import braille formatted files in UEB text with UEB math, translate them into inkprint, and then produce them in inkprint using Scientific Notebook or MathType.
• You can import braille formatted files in UEB text with Nemeth math, translate them into inkprint, and then produce them in inkprint using Scientific Notebook or MathType. (You must follow our specific instructions to do this.)
• You can now easily produce Nemeth math within UEB braille with appropriate indicators (see Template Improvements).

DBT Template Improvements

• For easier recognition, we have renamed a number of templates. Instead of English (Unified), the names are now English (UEB). All English language templates not using UEB braille are marked pre-UEB.
• We created a new template for Nemeth code math within UEB, called English (UEB) - BANA with Nemeth.
• We include a new UEB Template for Australia: English (UEB) - Australian Formatting.
• We include a new UEB Template for New Zealand: English (UEB) - New Zealand (including Maori)
• We upgraded the English (UEB) - UK Formatting template with many additional styles.
• We modified several templates to better import files from Scientific Notebook.

File Open (Import)

• Former problems with paragraph numbering when importing files from Word and Open Office have been resolved.
• DBT's .docx importer now recognizes style names in files created with non-English editions of Word.
• Many aspects of file import are now unified so that there is more consistency across the many different file import paths. This should lead to better file imports for everyone.
• As an example, smart quote handling is now the same for all import paths.
• The stripping of unneeded Zero Width Joiner characters (U+200D) now works with all import paths, including XML.

User Interface Improvements

• Substantial work has been done to improve the Translated Line display.
• For a new installation, DBT offers an appropriate recommended template for more locations around the world, easing the set-up process.
• The Activation Process is now localizable. It is already available in French. Russian and some other languages are in progress.
• We have expanded the Hyperlink Import Screen and renamed it Import Options. These options affect all the import types, not just the Word importer.
• An important issue with UEB Math is control of spaces around signs of comparison. These spaces are placed for the lower grades and not placed for the upper grades. There is now a checkbox in the Import Options to control this behavior.
• There is a new Global Import Option checkbox that allows removing spaces around dashes. This is important in Australian formats. (The default is off.)
• Import options allow the user to specify the code page for a text file being imported. This may be most useful to users in Central Europe.

Accessibility and JAWS Script Files

• We have revised the information layout and navigation of the Activation Process to make it much more accessible to blind users.
• There are further improvements in the embossing of help pages.
• Previously, when you pressed Control+H in a DBT document to turn highlighting on or off, JAWS did not say if it was now on or off. JAWS now reports the highlighting state, whether changed via Control+H or the Edit menu.
• Previously, when navigating through a document with highlighting on, JAWS would read two items, the item the cursor landed on and the item it left. That is no longer done. Now JAWS reads one item and tells you if it is being selected or unselected.
• If the JAWS version is 14 or above, the speaking is customized for DBT as it is when not selecting. For example, when selecting or unselecting a line in a braille document, JAWS speaks the print back-translation of that line. When selecting or unselecting a DBT code, JAWS speaks the code instead of the left bracket, the individual characters, and then right bracket. When selecting or unselecting a braille character, JAWS speaks it as a braille cell rather than as an ASCII character.
• Previously, when moving word by word in a braille document, JAWS would try to pronounce the word as ASCII; now it spells the word as braille cells. It also does that when selecting or unselecting a braille word.
• Previously, JAWS would beep to indicate a line that was skipped because of styles or codes. It no longer beeps. Instead, you can choose to have these line skips announced. The Alt+I toggle used to let you choose whether to have JAWS announce style changes. Now the Alt+I toggle allows for a choice of whether to announce style changes and whether to announce skipped lines (a total of four choices).
• When using a braille device, it is now possible to have JAWS remain silent when you move up or down line by line. Press Alt+U to tell JAWS not to use the translated line for moving up and down.
• There is better support for using commands from the keyboard of your braille device, such as the JAWS commands for BrailleNextLine and BraillePriorLine (which will braille the indicated line without speech, even if you have the Alt+U toggle set for speaking the translated line when using the computer keyboard).

Improvements to the Activation Process

• We have redesigned the activation wizard interface to interact more naturally with screen readers. There are major improvements to screen layout, information organization, screen navigation, and text voicing.
• The activation process has been localized for additional languages beyond English.
• The activation process responses have been fine-tuned to keep the user on the correct path and avoid some common operator errors.
• If an internet activation attempt cannot connect, the recovery process saves vital information so that the option to activate by email can succeed.
• Activation diagnostics now detect some common user problems like activation folders that lack write access and unusual cases like inconsistent license information. In general, diagnostics provide more information than before to help identify user problems.
• The process to register for user group emails is now current with Canadian anti-spam regulations.

Braille Embossers

• DBT now supports integration of Tactile View graphics with the Index and Tiger lines of braille embossers.
• DBT now supports the Nippon Telesoft Gemini Super2 embosser.
• It now supports the Enabling Phoenix Gold embosser.
• DBT has improved support for the Enabling BraillePlace embosser.
• The issue of controlling "ET Speaks" from DBT is now resolved.
• DBT supports A3 portrait paper (49x41) for the Index-D V.4 embosser and the Index Braille Box.
• Certain Braillo models have a multiple copy feature (to facilitate display on the Braillo of the number of copies embossed). DBT now supports this feature.
• In Embosser Setup, the default embosser output has been changed from Port to Printer, which is now the more common case.

New Languages and Translation Improvements

• Duxbury is making strides to turn braille emphasis into the markup for inkprint emphasis in braille-to-print translation. This feature is described in the table below as "Respecting emphasis in braille-to-print." It means a student can write a paper in braille on a refreshable braille device, convert to inkprint in Duxbury, and export to Word with all the emphasis of the original braille showing up in the Word file.
• The new version of DBT presents the Biblical Original Language Studies table to meet the needs of blind biblical scholars.

This Service Release includes the following improvements, many of which are significant for some users:

DAISY/NISO Importer

• A flaw in the DAISY/NISO importer in DBT 11.2 SR2 causing the text of an imported document to be repeated has been fixed.

JAWS Scripts

• The JAWS script files have been updated to set refreshable braille to six dots whenever you are editing a braille document.

Word File Importer

• The importation of some space Unicode characters U+2000-200A has been improved. If a thin space (U+2009) is used between groups of digits, this becomes a dot 5 in UEB braille.
• The importation of some Arabic presentation characters has been improved.
• Alt Text for MathType objects is now imported in .docx files.
• DBT more reliably imports (single line) headers and footers from .docx files.
• When using Braille or Simbraille fonts, all spaces will be retained. This enables simple braille graphics to be produced in Word, which import faithfully in to DBT. See Simple Braille Graphics in the Help. for more information/)
• Whenever the .docx importer places text in a brlinline style, it will also mark that text to preserve all spacing. All spaces in the .docx file should be preserved in the DBT print file.
• DBT's .doc file importer now avoids cutting short Alt Text.
• Inserting [lng] codes (to revert to a document's base language) when importing .docx files now works correctly.
• Improvements have been made in the importing of matrices, determinants, systems of simultaneous equations, piecewise-defined functions, and the like via MathType.

BANA Template

• The Susan Christensen BANA templates supplied with DBT have been updated by her to improve support for the listed table format and direct braille entry. This update includes the BANA Braille 2014 template for Word and the three DBT templates that have BANA in their name

Unified English Braille (UEB) Literary

• The various English translators have been updated to treat a right single quote (U+2019) as an apostrophe when followed by a letter.
• The English/Unified print-to-braille table has been updated to correct the contraction usage in several unusual words, notably certain words commencing with be.
• The English/Unified print-to-braille translation table has been updated to correct the contraction of the word bein' in certain contexts.
• The English/Unified print-to-braille translation table has been updated to improve the passage/word choice logic for certain unusual sequences of fully capitalized words.

Unified English Braille (UEB) Mathematical and Technical

A great deal of work has been done (and is still on-going) in connection with "UEB Guidelines for Technical Material". A slightly revised 2014 version of this publication is due to be released soon, and will be available from http://www.iceb.org/ueb.html.

Use of MathType 6.9A, rather than earlier versions, improves DBT MathType imports of Word documents with math that was entered with Equation Editor instead of MathType. With earlier versions of MathType, the expressions would come into DBT as displayed math on a separate line even when they are meant to be embedded in the text. Note: MathType 6.9A is not out yet, it will be released sometime in September, 2014.

A trial copy of MathType 6.9A is included on the DBT 11.2 (SR3) CD. Please note that you will only be able to upgrade an existing 6.9 at no charge. You may also obtain it from here [Download 6.9a MathType upgrade for 6.9]

• The English/Unified print-to-braille translation table has been updated to support the code [big] for handling enlarged signs of enclosure, and also to support U+2257 (ring over equals).
• Work is on-going with Matrices, but there have been improvements in this area.
• The English/Unified translation tables have been updated to support several technical symbols.
• The English/Unified print-to-braille translation table has been updated to recognize codes [sqrtsN] and [sqrteN] as equivalent to [sqrts] and [sqrte] respectively, and to add support for certain uncommon Unicode symbols.
• The English/Unified print-to-braille translation table has been updated to correct the output for U+2197 (northeast arrow).

Nemeth Math.

• When translating Nemeth Code from braille to print, default numeric subscripts are now supported.
• When translating from print to Nemeth Code braille, a number at the baseline level that immediately follows a letter now gets a preceding dot 5 as desired.

Tabular Material

• Shift-Tab and Tab key navigation through tables with incomplete rows is working more smoothly.
• Minimum guide dots for tabular material (related columns) has been set to two.
• There is an adjustment to the number of header rows and header columns presumed for a table when no header column or row count is declared in the htbs code, as is generally the case for any newly-imported table. With the change, tables of related columns will continue to presume one header row only if there are at least two rows in the table. They will continue to presume one header column only if each row contains at least two columns. In all other cases, zero header rows/columns are assumed.

DBT Styles and Codes

• DBT will more reliably reload the initial style if it is added, removed, or redefined.
• There is a new code implemented in DBT: [svpalS:N]. It is intended to allow for variations to BANA Braille. See the codes reference for the details.
• A problem with the [mfce] code has been fixed. The problem prevented resetting behaviors related to runovers.

Embossers and Embossing

• •Interpoint 55 - DBT produces *.x55 files, and these files can be directed to the Interpoint 55 with the Wprint55 program.
• Cosmo embossing now uses a background thread. it is a convenience because it is possible to get back to editing sooner. However, it leaves no way to cancel embossing other than to exit DBT. Exiting DBT will cancel Cosmo embossing without warning.
• ViewPlus Tiger embossers are now capable of being switched between single and double-sided from within DBT.
• Viewplus Premier with Ink Connect is now supported.

Language Improvements

Language development is an on-going process, and the introduction of Unified English Braille in some countries, South Africa for example, has resulted in changes being made to languages used within the country.

	Armenian now supporting the U+055B Armenian emphasis character. In ink-print, this is a single character at the end of a word.
	Azerbaijani: question mark and curling quotes have been fixed.
	Cantonese now handling English text mixed with Cantonese.
	Danish now handles lower quote marks.
	We now support the Dutch 2005 braille revision.
	Italian braille-to-print now produces the at-sign correctly
	DBT now supports the Taiwan variation for Mandarin braille.
	Turkish letter sign and uncontracted Turkish now function properly.
	South Africa. The Venda table has been updated. A stub braille-to-print table now uses UEB instead of older forms of English braille. Also Swati and Ndebele each have a single contraction fixed.

Word 2007, 2010, 2013

• The importer for docx files has been improved to allow better recognition of character fonts. Superscript and subscripts are again properly recognized.
• Braille fonts and Courier (and Consolas) fonts are recognized.
• Bold, Italic, and Underline recognized when applied through a character style, unless the character style is mapped into a DBT style.
• The latest BANA Template for Word has been included.

Unified English Braille (UEB)

UEB will begin being formally taught in UK schools in September this year (2014). Users are therefore advised to ensure that upgrades have been applied to older versions.

• There have been a number of very minor changes made to the UEB tables in this release due to clarification of some rules by ICEB.
• A new template, named English (Unified) - UK formatting has been added to simplify the production of UEB braille while using current UK formatting conventions. The template parallels the existing English (British) - with capitals template in that it contains all of the same style names. Most styles are identically defined, but where necessary style definitions have been adapted for UEB. In particular, the <acronym> style has been set to null since no special treatment is required for acronyms in UEB.
• A new template, named English (Unified) - BANA has been added to simplify the production of UEB braille while using BANA formatting conventions. The template parallels the existing English (American Textbook DE) - BANA template in that it contains all of the same style names, thus enabling production using Word in the same manner as now set up for production of pre-UEB American braille following BANA guidelines. Most styles are identically defined, but where necessary style definitions have been adapted for UEB. Styles have also been added for script, Maori, Hawaiian and Portuguese.

Mathematics

We continue to improve DBT's math braille capabilities, and are grateful to those who have helped us in this regard.

• In MathType imports, we fixed some issues which caused extra blank lines.
• Handling of over/under math characters has been enhanced.
• Additional characters and a few more tabular structures are now supported.
• In LaTeX imports we have added support for \widetilde.

Language Improvements

	Several tables for South African languages of that nation have been updated. They are: Nguni (Xhosa and Zulu), Ndebele, and Swati. Stub braille-to-print tables now use UEB instead of older forms of English braille.
	The Croatian translator now meets all standards for contracted and uncontracted braille.
	Danish: the braille-to-print translator has been fixed for four contractions, to match the print-to-braille Danish translator.
	Updated Filipino and Tagalog to deal with a list of words which did not contract correctly. These have been fixed.
	Added automatic hyphenation for Italian. Also respecting emphasis on braille-to-print.
	We have revised both translators for Japanese. We have also improved import of Japanese punctuation, and added a better screen display for Japanese transcribers.
	The Swahilli table has been modified to incorporate handling grade one Arabic script.

This web Service Release includes the following improvements, a few of which are significant for some users:

• The activation wizard has been updated to fix a problem when using a custom installation in a drive other than C.
• Embossing on all Braillo non-sideways embossers is improved. (That is all Braillo embosser models without sw or stitch and fold in their model names.)
• The JAWS script has been updated.
• Corrected the handling of the symbol right harpoon over left harpoon (used in Chemical equations) in file imports.

Major New Features

• DBT has always been at the forefront in implementing Unified English Braille. 11.2 contains further enhancements. DBT now has a UEB Learning Series for the UK (these are a series of translators that allow learning of contractions in graduated steps).

Installation, Activation, De-activation, and Network Installation

• DBT now contains an Activation Wizard to guide a user through the activation process.
• The Activation Wizard contains a diagnostic screen to help the user understand the activation status on a given computer.
• The Activation Wizard is very aware of subtle traps made by some versions of Microsoft: the Wizard knows about variations in UAC controls and only requests elevated credentials when they are truly needed.
• It is now possible to fix many activation problems without having to uninstall DBT (and then re-install DBT).
• The software to manage a network installation is available as a separate download. This program is helpful in situation where another product uses a similar activation system.
• The Network installation no longer requires writing text files.

Mathematics Issues

• Now students or teachers can six key in Nemeth and get print math to their printer for the print reader! (See next two items)
• DBT now has a translation table to translate Nemeth Code technical notation into DBT print math in a .dxp file.
• DBT now has an experimental option to save a .dxp file as LaTeX. This allows DBT print math, which may have come from braille-to-print translation of UEB or Nemeth Code, to be brought into a program, like Scientific Viewer, where a sighted teacher or colleague can view the math.
• In a matrix or determinant, DBT now uses the proper one space between columns instead of two.
• In Nemeth Code, bold items in technical notation, such as vectors and bold numbers, are now translated with the proper Nemeth Code typeform indicator.
• DBT now imports a kind of matrix from Scientific Notebook and other LaTeX files that it did not recognize before. (Previously a matrix in a LaTeX file had to use \begin{array} and \end{array} commands; now \begin{matrix} and \end{matrix} work as well.)
• A large number of problems with conversion from MathType that gave the message MathType Conversion Error: mtTRANSLATOR have been fixed.
• A large number of problems with conversion from MathType that gave the message MathType Conversion Error: mtNOT_FOUND have been fixed.
• A problem with converting very large expressions from MathType that gave the error message MathType Conversion Error: mtMEMORY has been fixed.
• Some problems with converting from MathType that gave extra text like 0.5em in the document have been fixed.
• In UEB print-to-braille translation, a hyphen within technical notation is now treated as a minus sign (dots 5, 36) unless that is overridden with a new [ammh] code.
• When importing a hard space from MathType or LaTeX, DBT now preserves it as a hard space. This is useful for handling numbers with separated groups of digits in UEB.
• Some symbols that weren't included in the MathType importer and would come up missing in the DBT file have been added. These include the expanding integral sign (a character for the integral sign which takes care of changing its size for typesetting needs).
• The handling of various commands and structures in the LaTeX importer has been improved. For example, the use of \[ and \] now causes the math item to be on a line of its own in DBT; the importing of LaTeX tables has been improved.

Nemeth Braille-to-Print

Duxbury DBT can now produce math printed output directly from braille. This works with three types of Duxbury DBT *.dxb braille files:

• Just Nemeth braille in DBT (everything is in math mode). Use the Math Notation (Nemeth 1972 math mode only) Template. With this template, writing math is easy, writing text is harder. See How to Write These Files (below).
• A mixture of literary braille text and math Nemeth braille. Use the English text with math Template that you create yourself. See Save the Math Template for Your Own Use (below).
• A UEB file, which can mix UEB literary text with UEB math. Use the English (Unified) Template. When BANA voted to adopt UEB in the United States, the vote included maintaining Nemeth Code for technical material. Thus UEB math has a more limited role in the US.

Embosser Support

• Support for the new Enabling Cyclone and Enabling Trident embossers.
• Support for the Viewplus EmBraille
• Support for new Braillo embossers: Braillo 300, Braillo 600SR, Braillo 650 6&F, and Braillo 650 SW

• In Verbose Mode, DBT shows the Unicode number of the current character at the cursor position on the status line.
• As always, many improvements have been made to make DBT a more stable environment.
• As always, many fixes have been done to improve the importation of Word and Open Office files.

DBT 11.2: Languages and Braille

Language Highlights

Better Font Support for most languages. For many languages of the world, the DBT print screen is readable, and editing is possible.

New User Interfaces: now supporting a Czech and a Chinese User interface.

New Languages: Bengali for Bangladesh (supporting the braille rules of Feb. 1996), Croatian contracted braille supported, Montenegrin, Tatar, and Udmurt. Contracted Turkish braille and Taiwan braille supported with a supplemental download from Duxbury Systems.

New Braille-to-print for existing languages: Amharic, Mandarin Chinese, Hausa, Somali, Swahili, and Yoruba.

We have added a new feature to the Serbian braille-to-print: while this usually uses the Cyrillic alphabet, the use of a variation code [vrn~ar] changes the braille-to-print translator to use the Roman alphabet. Another variation code [vrn~ac] reverts back to using the Cyrillic alphabet. These codes also work on other languages closely tied to Serbian.

Modest adjustments have been made in the handling of punctuation in the translators for the following European languages: Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Luxembourgian, Maltese, Portuguese, Serbian, and Turkish.

Arabic and Hebrew are still not supported by the DBT editor. While the display may be improved, DBT is still not able to entirely figure out what is right-to-left, and what is left-to-right, so editing a line is absolutely not recommended until this issue is resolved.

Inspired by new braille entry devices, Duxbury Systems has made an effort to improve braille-to-print in almost every language. We welcome your suggestions on how we can further make progress in this area. The languages of India, plus Lao, Thai, Hebrew, Vietnamese, have been especially improved.

• Additional UK/BAUK braille math matters using Word and MathType have been resolved. UK/BAUK math users are advised to upgrade to this version. Please also note that all our testing has been done using the latest version 6.7a of MathType, and users are advised to upgrade where possible.

Script and Font Issues

Some fonts are fixed width, and some fonts are variable width. The print side of DBT only uses a select group of fixed width fonts that meet its technical criteria. In order to view some scripts in DBT files, we need to be careful about fonts and operating systems.

A few scripts (Ethiopic, Khmer, Lao, Oriya, Sinhala, and Tibetan) are best viewed on a Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 machine.

Only Myanmar script is best viewed on Windows 8 or Windows 10.

DBT 11.1 adds 20 additional script systems. To get this material into DBT, you must import from a file that is using a Unicode font.
• The Importer now handles the Registered, Copyright, and Trade Mark signs to import each of these as a single character.
• The Global, Word Importer pane has a radio button to select the language of preference for Han (Chinese) characters. You can select Mandarin, Yue (Cantonese), Japanese, or Korean.
• The scrub table aposq.sbt may be removed or renamed to disable "smart quote" changes made automatically during XML imports. This includes SGML/XML, DAISY/NISO, OpenOffice, and Office 2007 imports. Note that, if instead of removing aposq.sbt, you edit the file and cause it to be invalid, you will not get any error or warning message. In this case, the importer will simply skip the processing in this file just as if the file had been removed or renamed.

Math Issues

• Improvements in importing with MathType 6.5 and MathType 6.6
• Improvements in importing with MathType 6.7.

JAWS Issues

• DBT's automated JAWS script installer has been corrected, such that it will recognize JAWS version 10.0 and beyond.
• When you exit the menus and no document is open, now JAWS gives the Duxbury message instead of being silent.
• When you press the current character keystroke two or three times quickly, now you get the default JAWS behavior, which gives more information about the character.

User Interface

• There is a new menu item Translate Help on the Help Menu that lets you read the DBT 11.1 documentation in over 40 languages using Google Translate.
• When you import a file into DBT or create a new document, you need to select a document Template. These Templates have been divided into geographic regions to make this list manageable. As before, there is an option to hide templates. Be aware that once you change regions, all the hidden template become unhidden.
• On the Document Menu, you can select a translation table. These translation tables have been divided into geographic regions to make this list manageable.
• The Global, Word Importer pane has a radio button to select the language of preference for Han characters. You can select Mandarin, Yue (Cantonese), Japanese, and Korean.

English/American (Textbook)

• updated to fix a problem whereby single lowercase bold letters, when bold is distinguished from italics, could be given two letter signs instead of just one.

English/British

• the table has been revised so that implementation of emphasis rules (for italics, bold and underlining) in English literary text is now carried out exclusively at the translation table level. The primary reason for this change is to fix problems that could be caused by the presence of certain commands, e.g. the [ii] (grade 1 with indicator) command, which formerly could interrupt recognition of a longer emphasized passage, causing it to be treated as individual emphasized words.
• updated to support additional precomposed accented letters from Unicode page U+01xx.
• updated so that Letter signs should be used on isolated letters and letter-strings followed immediately by digits in grade 1 as well as grade 2.

English/Unified (UEB)

• updated to support y with acute accent
• support vowels with macrons
• refine the implementation of the "standing-alone" rule (e.g. to disallow an asterisk as permitted right-hand punctuation for purposes of that rule).
• updated to support several additional extended words containing shortforms that were recently added to the official list.
• updated to add support for four Old/Middle English letters (yogh, thorn, eth and wynn [wen]).
• Translation commands [ucs] ... [uce] have been added to the command set. These commands allow a user to override the normal treatment of capital letters, in particular to mark a capital "passage" that contains internal formatting commands that would otherwise cause the passage to be treated as two or more separate passages.

Codes and Special Characters

• [rfs] and [rfe] codes are now cut, copied, and deleted as a pair, as [tls] and [tle] have been right along.
• It is now possible to edit code sequences up to 1000 characters for style start and style end definitions.
• DBT will now handle processing instructions of the form <?dbt $dbtcode`?>.
• A problem was corrected with RNIB-style reference-page-number breaks when the "use runover site" option (per the fourth parameter to a prior [svles...] command) was in effect. The subsequent text was being placed on the same line as the reference page indication; it is now placed on the next line as it should be, and the appropriate margin (left or runover) is observed.
• A problem with double centering (resulting in a net incorrect offset) when a reference-page-number line occurred within a centered heading has been corrected.
• The software has been updated so that [wb-cb] ... [wb] codes surround the text within the <compinline> style (as was already the case with the <compdisplay> style). This is to assure that the hyphen (continuation indicator) appropriate to computerese is used in cases where a URL is too long for a line. Likewise in all templates where those codes were used in <compdisplay> but not in <compinline>, they are now used in the latter style as well. Further, the code [svcbh~"] was added to the <initial> style of the templates for English/British and UEB, so that dot 5 is used for the continuation indicator in computerese.
• Optional hyphens in text boxes within Word will no longer cause a corrupted DBT document after the completion of the import. The same fix presumably fixes corruption problems with optional hyphens in document headers, footers, footnotes, and endnotes.
• The Change Case feature has been updated: it has been revised to skip over codes when analyzing and modifying text. Earlier it capitalized more or fewer letters near the end of the selection than it should have; in some very rare cases, it might have locked up entirely. Also, for long selections, Change Case has been taking far too long to complete. These problems have both been corrected.

If you select one of the translation tables (listed below in parenthesis), you will be offered these Learning Series. The Learning Series is an new item on the Document Menu. If it is greyed out, you have not selected the proper Translation Table.

Take Off Series

Produced in consultation with the VIEW Children's Braille Committee, this scheme aims to develop a child's phonic skills, and knowledge of braille contractions and wordsigns. It also encourages enjoyment of reading and writing. The course takes the learner to the end of grade 2 braille.

Each series is identified by the colour of the cover and tactile illustrations. A print version of the braille text appears on facing pages throughout to encourage shared reading at home and school.

Each booklet contains a practice page and story; booklets in series 1 to 10 also include a “fun page” of activities to encourage braille writing.

Take Off pack A (series 1 to 6) (TC21192) comprises 36 booklets (six in each series) and can be used with the following reading courses:

• Abi books 1 to 40
• Read On series 1 to 6
• Take Off series 1 to 3 can be used with Get Going.

Take Off pack B (series 7 to 12) (TC21193) comprises 26 booklets (five in series 7 to 8 and four in series 9 to 12) and can be used with the following reading courses:

DBT 10.7 SR1 / 2009-3-18 (2009-6-5)

Here is a list of what's new since DBT 10.7:

Win 7	DBT works on Windows 7 with the same issues DBT experiences with Vista.
	Swedish encoding of braille documents has been added.
	French fonts have been renamed to be compatible with DBT’s Word importer. Versions of the fonts shipped with DBT 10.7 were not being recognized for purposes of reading in braille text marked up to avoid “double translation”.
	A new French encoding for braille documents, “French Chiffres”, has been added. The standard “French” braille encoding for braille documents has been modified to match updated standards; the older encoding is now called “French 6 points”. (These changes are in display.cpt.)
	Revised French documentation, and revised French DBT and Word templates. These changes should affect only those who use adaptations to DBT developed at AVH for use in producing French braille.
Translators	Translation improvements have been made to these tables:
	English/American (literary and textbook templates) -- Both American tables have been updated to conform to new rules regarding partially-emphasized words, and for improved handling of Greek letters within English context. A new "variation" code has been added to permit entering fractions more conveniently using a simple slash, e.g. 1/2 for one-half, when appropriate (as in cookbooks).
	Arabic -- Additional Unicode characters are now supported, as well as the standard "Arabic" page.
	Bulgarian -- (Minor update only.)
	Modern Greek -- Additional Unicode characters, as well as the standard basic "Greek" page, are now supported. The Nemeth Code is now supported for mathematics.
	English/British -- Corrections and improvements were made to the logic for inserting clarifying parentheses into algebraic fractions. The handling of mixed numbers imported from LaTeX documents was corrected. Other corrections affected the handling of certain apostrophe-letter endings in grade 1, embedded German, and other miscellaneous situations.
	English/Unified -- These tables were extensively updated to conform more closely to the latest transcriber rules for capitalization, shortform usage, lower-sign contraction usage, and other miscellaneous matters. A new pair of commands, [ucs] ... [uce], have been provided to allow manual control of capital passage extent when desired.
	French/Unified -- The treatment of apostrophe (') has been corrected in [cz;f] mode. Certain capital passage and double-sign issues have also been addressed.
	Croatian -- (Internal update only -- no functional change.)
	Kazakh -- Arabic script (as well as Cyrillic script) is now accepted as input.
	Malay -- The logic for contraction usage has been extensively updated.
	Norwegian -- The logic for contraction usage has been improved, and the treatment of comma within numbers corrected. Support for contracted English embedded within Norwegian has been removed, as such text is normally uncontracted.
	Russian -- Arabic script (as well as Cyrillic script) is now accepted as input.
	Ukrainian -- Arabic script (as well as Cyrillic script) is now accepted as input.
Embossers	Improvements have been made for these embossers:
Tiger	All supported Tiger models: DBT has been updated to meet the requirements of the latest drivers from ViewPlus. (However, we are not adding to DBT 10.7 SR1 support for any Tiger embosser models not supported by DBT 10.7.)
Tiger	Tiger Pro Ink: ink placement has been corrected; ink placement, font choice and font size can also be adjusted, though this presently requires registry “tinkering”.
VP Duo	VersaPoint Duo: graphics support improved.
PED-30	PED-30 plate embossers: more “handshaking” options have been added, and the inclusion of a blank “last side” when there are an odd number of sides to emboss has been suppressed, saving the operator loading a plate at the end of a job only to see it come through without any embossing.
Thiel	Thiel Beta X-3: additional paper sizes are now supported.
Gemini	A defect in interline print output on Gemini embossers has been corrected.
Import	DBT’s Word importer will support use of the Math12 font. This change is in wrduni.txt, along with myriad other changes geared toward future support of new languages, as in chitab.txt.

DBT 10.7 / 2008-5-20 (2008-06-23)

Here is a list of what's new since DBT 10.6 SR4:

Direct imports of math in Word documents with MathType 5 or 6 installed

DBT's Word importer supports importation of mathematical expressions created with either MathType or Equation Editor. It does *not* support math typed directly into the text. That will still come in as it always has.

The importer requires that either MathType 6 or MathType 5 be installed and activated. They can be installed anywhere (i.e. they do not need to be installed within the DBT folder). MathType is a powerful interactive tool for Windows and Macintosh that lets you create mathematical notation for word processing, web pages, desktop publishing, presentations, and for TeX, LaTeX, and MathML documents. DBT's importing of MathType expression works only with Microsoft Word files.

Updated BANA translation

English/American: The BANA 2007 updates have been implemented), notably including the two-cell slash, the use of the termination sign instead of hyphen to signal the end of the effect of the double capital sign, and other updated rules and added symbols. A control ("[big]") was added to provide for enlarged enclosure symbols in Nemeth Code.

Updated BAUK translation

A facility has been added to enable "locking" of the grade of translation, primarily to facilitate production of texts entirely in grade 1 despite the presence of [g2] in the text or within styles. See LOCK Grade 1 or 2 for more details.

Updated UEB (Unified English Braille) Translation

English/UEB: Transcription rule decisions of the UEB Committee through January 2008 have been implemented, including those affecting the treatment of shortform words and lower signs, and the extent of grade 1 word mode when initiated by a number. The braille-to-print UEB tables have been revised to construct appropriate print (.dxp) file encoding for most math structures and certain symbols, thereby replacing some of the "double-brace" notation typically used for indicators, etc. when translating from braille to print.

NEW Pharma EBU/EC translation and template - EBU Pharma

At the time of writing (March 2008) the European Braille Union (EBU) have been discussing a proposed common/standard Pharmaceutical Braille code with European Braille Authorities to be used exclusively on medicinal packaging throughout Europe. Updated French translation

French/Unified: The print-to-braille tables have been updated to conform more closely to the new French mathematics code. The braille-to-print tables have been updated to include common computer and currency symbols.

Support added for Enabling Technologies new Romeo Pro 50LE

At the time of writing (March 2008) Enabling Technologies Inc were in the process of manufacturing a dedicated labelling embosser. Limited to 24 cells maximum width, the output is approximately 40% faster than a standard Romeo Pro.

DBT 10.7 includes additional form depths for this embosser from 0.5 inches to 4 inches in depth in increments of 0.25 of an inch.

10.6 Service Release 1 / 2007-2-21 (2007-2-28)

Featured Improvements

• DBT can now be installed in Windows Vista. (But note that slsService is not Vista-compatible, so if activation is to be shared among many computers, the computer holding the activation must not be running Vista. Other computers certainly can.)
• Daisy/NIMAS imports have been improved and made more flexible. When appropriate, the Daisy-specific document template is automatically selected, avoiding a common mistake made in importing these documents.

Editing Improvements

• DBT's responsiveness while editing a document has been improved in some unusual environments where sluggishness had been reported.
• Applying a linear style will no longer remove a [fte~i] or similar code at the end of a line.
• When deleting a code with a matching code that includes a number or a parameter (e.g. deleting [ptye] after [ptys2]), DBT now correctly deletes the entire matching code.
• The list of open documents in the View menu has been improved.
• "Replace all" now works correctly when certain special characters such as bullets are replaced.
• When attempting to insert a Braille document into a print document or vice versa, DBT will now refuse to do so, rather than just display an error and proceed with the insert.
• Rendering of [gd] code in coded view is corrected.
• The [caplv], [ftlv], and [xcs] codes have been added to the code list (F5 list). These codes are honored by DBT 10.6, but could not be entered via the code list.
• A bug has been fixed that caused a lock-up when generating a table of contents in some circumstances.

Translation and Formatting Improvements

• Support has been added for Amharic, Khmer, and Ukrainian translation.
• The Farsi table has been updated so that two variant letter forms are treated the same as the corresponding regular Arabic letter forms, i.e. U+06a9 Arabic letter keheh = variant of U+0643 Arabic letter kaf Arabic letter farsi yeh = variant of U+064a Arabic letter yeh
• Translation fixes have been made in the Polish tables.
• The Lithuanian braille-to-print table has been updated to process Lithuanian text properly as such, including the special Lithuanian letters. (Formerly it was a placeholder suitable only for the Latin-1 letters and embedded English.)
• The English/Unified print-to-braille table has been updated in order to correct an infinite loop that would occur when [vrn~ida] (informal treatment of hyphen, as requested in Australia) was in effect and a capitalized passage was encountered that in fact also contained some digits.
• The "new" English/British print-to-braille translation table has been updated so that:
  1. When suppressing capitals ([caplv1] in effect), code [ii] (as in the "acronym" style) will not cause an unwanted extra letter sign when applied to an acronym that coincidentally is a Roman numeral, e.g. CD or VI.
  2. Dots 456, 34 instead of just 34 is used for all explicit fractions in math as well as the literary oblique stroke.
• The French/Quebec table has been updated to implement [fts...] ... [fte...] emphasis tagging in the same manner as the "pre-Unified" French tables.
• A rare problem with the translation process, which affected American translations only, has been corrected. The problem could cause word capitalization to be handled incorrectly in some cases within the ordinary text following the first reference to a computer notation style (such as compinline or compdisplay).
• DBT will no longer introduce spurious skipped lines within line-numbered BodyText.
• Several running header problems have been fixed, notably that a [tld] (discontinue running head) on the same page as [tls] ... [tle] (set running head) would cause a lockup (endless internal loop) in DBT when "anticipatory headers" mode is in effect (as for British practice).
• The formatter has been improved to guard against lockups even when due to yet-undiscovered problems.

Documentation Improvements

• Some helpful tips for Vista users have been added to the online help.
• Indexing of online help has been improved.
• Several new screen shots have been added to "The Menus".

Embosser Support Improvements

• The Modify Embosser and Remove buttons in DBT's Global Embosser Setup dialog will be disabled when it appears that a user will be unable to save the resulting change. This applies to any user not running "As Administrator" in Vista.
• The Embosser Setup configuration editing dialog (the dialog with General, Device Settings, and Advanced tabs) will now lock a limited user, or anybody not running "As Administrator" in Vista, into saving a configuration "For the current user only".
• Global Embosser Setup will now give an error message after any failure to save changes to embosser definitions.
• For the Braillo 200/400 series, DBT now positively resets the "page adjust" offset to zero in case it has been externally set to some other value.
• Support for the ViewPlus Emprint has been added.
• A braille spacing problem when interline print is included in output to Tiger embossers has been fixed.
• Control-Z has been added to the end of output for Index embossers and others that require it.
• Interpoint alignment on narrow paper has been improved for Index embossers.
• Multi-Copy output to pre-Model 3 Index embossers has been corrected.
• New keywords PortCloseSyncCount, PortCloseSyncByte, and PortCloseSyncPrompt are supported in emb.elt and myemb.elt. These are documented in emb.elt. They should not generally be necessary, except, in rare cases, when data is lost at the end of any embossing job, and the problem is not solvable using other handshaking adjustments. PortCloseSyncPrompt has in fact been added for the PED-30, which will otherwise lose part of the last page of data.
• If the user edits myemb.elt and introduces a syntax error, DBT will now report the error instead of just stopping at startup.
• Sequences in the form <Ctrl-X> within embosser configuration custom job setup strings will now work.
• Duxbury's embosser "drivers" now support a form offset. This is an advanced configuration feature that has been put to use on a PED-30 with plates that are less than the maximum width.
• The Index embosser driver files included with DBT have been updated. This provides for better support for newer Index models and Index embossers connected via a USB cable.
• Changes to paper size, margins, etc. made in Global, Embosser settings are now simpler to specify.
• Output to an Interpoint 55 embosser is working again, correcting a bug introduced in the original DBT 10.6.
• It is now possible to specify a VSHIFT value for an Interpoint 55 embosser in the Device Settings tab. Possible values are Auto-Rotate, 0, 1, 2, and 3.
• Some paper size corrections have been made in emb.elt.

Improvements for Microsoft Word

• The updated "Francais - 2006.dxt" is included in DBT distributions.
• Word imports are more robust when encountering paragraph numbering information in an unrecognized format.

JAWS Script Improvements

• When switching DBT back into focus in a braille document window, the user no longer gets an extra keyboard echo (QWERTY echo plus braille character echo).

Miscellaneous Improvements

• Cancel button in Global Printer Setup and Document Printer Setup now works without side effects.

• The prompt to remove temporary files, which typically followed after appearance of the Autosave Recovery Wizard, has been removed.
• SGML will now import when the file type was selected by the user rather than autodetected.

• An "English/American Textbook" translation table has been added, to accommodate the differences between general literary practice and the former "Textbook Formats" manual (now called "Braille Formats"). The unqualified "English/American" table continues to support the standard literary base code defined in "English Braille American Edition." The "Textbook" template now refers to this new American Textbook table.
• Bulgarian/Uncontracted translation tables have been added.
• Greek (Modern)/Uncontracted translation tables have been added.
• Vietnamese/Uncontracted translation tables have been added, with an experimental extension for math.
• The English/British translation tables have been changed so that computer notation is now done according to BAUK conventions instead of the BANA Computer Braille Code (CBC).
• An English/Australian translation table has been added, in which literary material follows British practice while computer notation is handled according to BANA CBC. (This is in effect the same as the table previously identified as English / British.)

• Microsoft Word imports have been improved in a number of respects, including the addition of a Global / Word Importer dialog that allows selecting: (1) whether to treat Courier font as CBC, (2) whether to preserve hard page breaks, and (3) whether to treat braille font as defining material already in braille (to be passed through without translation).
• An importer has been added for LaTeX files, such as those generated by the "Scientific Notebook" math editor, including both the text and the mathematics.
• An importer has been added for NISO (DAISY) XML files.
• ASCII files to be imported may be encoded according to Windows or Macintosh conventions as well as MS-DOS conventions.

• Support for print-to-English Moon translation has been added. (Moon is a system of tactile writing wherein the raised characters mostly resemble the print characters for which they stand, thereby making the system especially easy to learn for people who become blind late in life. Although it is not a form of braille, Moon can be used as a stepping-stone to the learning of braille. An Enabling Technologies embosser with "Moon mode" setting, or equivalent, must be used to emboss the output.)
• A graduated partial contraction series, following the "Cluster" Series developed and used at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI), has been added.
• The American English tables have been updated to: (1) correct contraction usage in certain obscure words; (2) incorporate a large number of technical symbols for mathematics; (3) add the Euro symbol; (4) force spaces around "signs of comparison" even if not present in the input; (5) recognize certain short "enclosed lists" in math automatically, even if not so marked; (6) add the translation codes [bolim] and [bulim] to stand for "lim" with bar over and under, respectively.
• The British English tables have been updated to: (1) add support for British maths, following "British Mathematics Notation 1987" and (2) allow contraction of "to", "into", or "by" followed by [ii] code.
• The Unified English (UEBC or UBC) tables have been updated to incorporate technical notation such as math.
• The Cymraeg (Welsh) tables have been updated to include direct codes for accented w and y, simplifying their import from Word.
• The French tables have been updated to: (1) exchange the braille signs for parentheses and quotes, change the sign for dash to dots 3-6, 3-6, and make corresponding changes in contraction usage per new French rules; (2) add the translation code [vrn~gpt] to allow translation of those characters (guillemets, parenthSses, tirets) and contractions according to the "old" rules (and code [vrn] cancels that effect); and (3) add support for French mathematics braille.
• The Irish Gaelic tables have been updated per new information about contraction usage.
• The Spanish (Uncontracted) tables have been updated for new punctuation marks and other symbols per "Manual de Transcription Braille" (1998 ONCE) and other sources.
• Some embosser setup parameters have been added or corrected.
• Under Global / Internationalization, French has been added as a selectable code page for braille display driving.
• The Help system has been overhauled, and now includes Windows HTML-style help and two new documents: a Transcriber's Guide and a Translation Tables Reference.
• A crashing bug that could be encountered after use of scrollbars has been corrected.
• The search/replace functions have been updated to allow entry of accented letters and other miscellaneous characters into the search and replace fields, and to correct a bug that could cause some replacements to be missed.

• We have improved the coded view text wrapping so that the line won't wrap at the first letter of the line, and cursor placement, so that the cursor and new text will appear on one line.
• We have improved the formatted view cursor placement so that the cursor may be viewed on blank lines.
• Some crashes that could be encountered while scrolling or auto-scrolling have been fixed.
• Table imports from MS Word have been greatly improved, so that the outline form of braille tables are automated.
• DBT now recognizes several of the most commonly used MS Word styles, and equates them with DBT styles. For instance, the Word style "Normal" imports as the DBT style "para."
• DBT now supports the auto-numbered lists and auto-bulleted lists which MS Word creates. We do recommend using list styles in Word when creating lists, so as to enable DBT to import the formatting better.
• DBT now recognizes bold and italic font changes, and automatically applies the braille symbols appropriately. Please note that this will not affect the print document, as DBT currently does not support font changes within a print document.
• If text in a braille font is imported from another document, DBT will use "grade 0," which will leave the imported braille as-is through the import and translation processes.

• The ability to select contractions when using the American tables (by section from the LOC "Braille Instruction Manual") is now incorporated within DBT's menus. (This was previously accomplished by manual file manipulations, using a separate free supplement nicknamed "WeeBee Dots".)
• The braille-to-print table selection is now automatically inferred from the print-to-braille choice.
• The WordPerfect character-set mapping tables have been updated so that Greek and Cyrillic text should now be converted, at the point of import, to special print file codes that directly determine the braille. This will effect useful braille translation in both cases. For Greek, the code used is for "classical" Greek.
• Foreign-language treatment within English has been both generalized and simplified by addition of the "[lng~..]" code for language switching. Older methods (based on the [fl-lifg] and [fl-span] codes) remain operative.
• By default, grade 1 within English now observes the dot-4 convention for accented letters, instead of presuming that French or German conventions should be followed, unless either the [fl-lifg] or the [fl-span] code has been explicitly used. A new code, [fl-none], can be used to restore the default condition if one of the other [fl-...] codes has been used (but the new [lng~...] codes are simpler and now preferred, in any case).
• Support for the Maori language (via [lng~mao]) has been added, within the American tables.
• New editing operations for style and line joining have been added.
• The quick-reference document on codes has been reorganized and updated.
• The braille-to-print translation has been updated slightly. The "religious" contractions will now be expanded only if the new "[vrn~rlg]" code is used; otherwise they will not be recognized. Also, we have discontinued the previous custom of using dot 4 to "quote" the next braille character, that is to assert that it has its "ASCII braille" meaning; instead, the BANA symbols using dot 4 prefix, such as the percent sign (dots 4, 2-5, 1-2-3-4) are recognized where appropriate. The former "quoting" behavior may be restored, if desired, using the new "[vrn~quo]" code.
