Clashes with Between Duxbury Translators

This documents differences between the West African languages, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Ewe translators.

To make sure that this new table is as compatable as possible with the existing DBT translators, we compared braille output from different translators. When possible, adjustments were made to the West African languages table.

The best way to make sure that all issues are dealt with is to set up secret modes to make the West African translator behave like existing translators. Where needed, the existing translators are set to uncontracted, Here are the differences discovered:

Clashes with Éwé

Éwé uses dots 46 for capitals (instead of dot 6). Three inkprint letters (j, x, and z) have non-standard braille (y, dots 146, and dots 12356).

Duxbury offers two flavors of Éwé: for Ghana and for Togo. The default is Ghana. To shift the Éwé DBT translator for Togo, issue the undocumented DBT variation code: Togo. This variation shifts the inkprint u to dots 1256. Except for this brief mention, we will ignore the Togo variation. There is no Togo mode in the West Africn translator.

Clashes with Hausa

Hausa does not use non-standard letters. There are no clashes. Please note: the existing DBT translator for Hausa can handle many modified letters.

Clashes with Igbo

The West African translator uses dot 4-h for h underdot, and dot 4-s for s underdot. The existing Igbo translator does not use dot 4 for those two characters.

Clashes with Yoruba

The West African translator uses dot 4-t for t underdot. The existing Yoruba translator does not use dot 4 for this character.

The West African translator uses dots 246 for the open o (ɔ). The existing Yoruba translator uses dots 4-246 for this character.
