Gallery - Vernal Pools

Vernal pools are an important habitat for certain species. They are filled with water in the spring but typically dry up during summer and fall. Vernal pools contain no fish that would otherwise eat the frog tadpoles and salamander larvae that breed in the pools.

Spotted Salamander

Swims (silently) in the cold, shallow vernal pool water.

Spring Peeper

Makes a high-pitched preep that can create a loud din when joined by a few hundred brethren.
