Jerry Fellows, a visitor to the Apple II History web site, kindly contributed a photo of this button. He told me this about the slogan:
II Infinitum itself was essentially a letter-writing campaign to Apple that took part in the first half of 1990, trying to garner additional support for the II series. I'm not sure if it had any impact aside from filling some inboxes at Apple for a while, but it was something that needed to be tried. There were many many folks who helped spread the word, starting with our initial group on AOL, spreading to Genie, and outward from there. It was work, but fun and worthwhile too. |
He designed the logo at the same time, and after getting feedback from fellow Apple II enthusiasts online, had the "II Infinitum" buttons created.
They were distributed during the Apple II sessions at a large Apple Users Group conference in the Chicago area that year. It eventually became the battle cry of the Apple II community, not only as a response to Apple's ill-fated "Apple II Forever" slogan from 1984, but also as a statement of defiance to those who were continually predicting the demise of the Apple II. The slogan eventually became available on buttons and T-shirts.
The creative ASCII artists on GEnie also created a text version of this button for online posting:
